Collection: Flutter
Flutter is an everyday collection based off my award-winning design Alabastra. In 2017 I won the contemporary category in the Jewellers Association of Australian’s design awards (JAA). The piece I made created some interest in my work not only as a jeweller but as an artist. I have since had Alabastra framed and hanging in my home studio where I see it every day.
For years I have been building the Flutter collection in my mind, and this year it finally ready to take flight!
There are so many variations of the designs I want to explore! I am hoping to make this collection unique and create each piece as an individual so that no two pieces will ever be the same.
The titanium is heated with a handheld torch and as the metal heats up it oxidises in a bright range of colours like yellow, rich purple, strong blues and soft blue. Certain colours are drawn out by hotter flames and others by gentler soft flames. By using a torch to change the colour I am able to achieve a water colour style blend between colours. I have been using sterling silver wire to make invisible rivets to hold the silver wing and the titanium together. But I already have ideas of using gold rivets to embrace and share the construction rather than hide it.
Just like a kaleidoscope of butterflies migrating in the spring, I am looking forward to the journey Flutter will take me on.
