Mixed Metal sand casting workshop

Welcome! My name is Kirra-lea and I am a trade-qualified jeweller who has been manufacturing for over 10 years. My passion lies in contemporary jewellery, particularly using and manipulating nature and raw materials to create bespoke jewellery. I have been using the sand casting technique for over 6 years, and for the past 4 I have been using the casting-in-place method. This process involves placing stones inside a mould, then pouring molten metal into the mould, allowing it to form around and securely encapsulate the stone, setting it in place.

If you attended my beginners, then this is the class for you!!

During this one-day workshop, I will be teaching the twice cast technique. Where you cast two different metals into the same design. In class we will be using a mix of copper/silver and brass/silver.

This workshop is specifically designed for creators who have had sand casting experience or have done my beginners workshop. There will be three demonstrations, each showing some variations on the twice cast techniques. Following the demonstrations, you will be given three projects. Each project will be your own design concept, exploring and applying the twice cast technique taught in the demonstration.

The materials supplied in the workshop include 30g of sterling silver, 10g of copper and 1g of brass. The materials provided will allow you to practice and make up to 4 projects. There will be the option to purchasing more metal if required. An extensive array of solid objects to mould and cast will be available, but you are welcome to bring your own to explore and use in the casting process. You can also bring your own metal if you would like to personalise a project.

Unfortunately there wont be allocated time during class to clean up your castings. You will need access to a jewellery studio to finish off your pieces in your own time.

The classes are limited to 6 students to ensure a flexible and tailored experience. All you need to bring is yourself! Snacks, tea and coffee will be provided. Please arrive dressed appropriately: closed in shoes, long pants and hair tied back. Please note that when working with clay, it can get a little messy so dark clothing is advised!

Please get in contact via instagram @kirraleajewellery or email kirraleajewellery@gmail.com if you have any questions. I look forward to creating with you!
