Cutlery sand casting workshop

About the artist

Welcome! My name is Kirra-lea and I am a trade-qualified jeweller who has been manufacturing for over 10 years. My passion lies in contemporary jewellery, particularly using and manipulating nature and raw materials to create bespoke jewellery. I have been using the sand casting technique for over 7 years. This process involves placing solid objects inside a mould, then pouring molten metal into the mould, allowing it to replicate the form and patterns exactly. During Melbourne’s stage four lockdown in 2020, I spent months experimenting on numerous sand casting projects until I discovered the beauty of casting cutlery and fell in love.

Workshop bits and pieces

During this one-day workshop, I will guide you through the process of conceptualising and casting your very own silver and copper pieces of cutlery. We will be making two items, one copper and silver regular sized piece, and one smaller copper piece. Whether it be a spoon, cheese knife, olive fork or serving utensil - anything can be sand cast! This workshop caters to all skill sets, including beginners with no previous experience. That means everyone is welcome! At the end of the workshop, you will have two pieces of unique, home-made cutlery finished and ready to use.

The materials provided in the workshop include 30g of sterling silver and 50g of copper. There will be an extensive collection of cutlery and solid objects to mould and cast, but you are welcome to bring along your own cutlery to explore and use in the casting process. You can also bring your own metal, should you wish to personalise a project with your own materials.

The materials provided will allow you to make two pieces of cutlery. If you require more material for your pieces, there will be an option to purchase more on the day (cash, bank transfer and card options will be accepted).

What to bring

The classes are limited to 6 students to ensure a flexible and tailored experience. All you need to bring is yourself! Lunch, tea and coffee will be provided. Please arrive dressed appropriately: closed in shoes, long pants and hair tied back. Please note that when working with clay, it can get a little messy!
